Top Dentist in Rockville MD

Cheryl Callahan, DDS

Dr Cheryl Callahan Callahan DentalDentistry allows me to blend art, science, and technology together, and in doing so create a functionally healthy and beautiful smile that can change a person’s life.

Dentistry also affords me the opportunity to meet and spend time with people from all over the world. Our conversations – what they teach me about their cultures, histories, traditions, and food, as well as stories about their lives, families, and experiences – broaden me as a person.

These conversations foster a connection and help to establish a meaningful relationship, as each person learns that I care about and respect them as an individual and am really listening to them.

While my focus is on oral health, my overall goal is to support each person as they achieve their healthiest, most wonderful smile and gain the confidence needed to pursue their dreams!

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Caring for people, and wanting to help them lead healthier, happier lives, has always been my drive.

My medical career started with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Northeastern University. Working in emergency medicine, I saw the connection between oral and bodily health, and realized dentistry would allow me to help people while also developing close and lasting relationships with those I served.

I returned to school, this time at the University of Michigan, where I obtained my Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS). After dental school, I moved to Maryland and went to work at Walter Reed Army Hospital. That experience was incredible: I was exposed to a wide range of oral health cases and was able to use my nursing and dental knowledge to treat military personnel in the hospital setting.

After three years at Walter Reed, I realized I was ready to move into private practice. Caring for service members was an honor, but I wanted to have time to spend with patients and the freedom to care for each in a manner that was right for their individual needs.

CONTINUING EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS

Dentistry, like all areas of healthcare, is constantly advancing and it is crucial I stay current on the latest changes. Through active and ongoing continuing education, I learn about innovative technologies, new materials, changes in methodologies, and emerging research.

Carefully evaluating each of these developments allows me to adopt proven, safe options that improve diagnostics, treatment planning, patient experience, and results. My patients deserve evidence-based, painless dentistry that delivers healthy and beautiful smiles; continuing education ensures I am providing it.

I am a member of the:

  • American Dental Association
  • Academy of General Dentistry
  • American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine
  • American Academy of Clear Aligners
  • American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry
  • Southern Maryland Dental Society
  • Greater Washington Academy of Women Dentists

Throughout the year, these organizations offer numerous meetings, lectures, and seminars, all of which are opportunities for me to learn.

I have also completed courses and trainings through the:

  • Pankey Institute of Advanced Dental Studies, graduate
  • Spear Education
  • DOCS
  • ACT Dental U

In addition to courses related to the latest developments in general dentistry, I have sought out education in areas that are of greatest concern and benefit to my patients. Aesthetic dentistry, dental implants and restorations, digital dentistry and CEREC®, and the treatment of sleep apnea are all services that improve my patients’ health and quality of life.

It is exciting to offer patients current, high-quality dental options. This allows me to create fully individualized treatment plans, which address the whole of the person’s needs and desires. It is a delight to see people’s happiness with their healthier, more attractive smiles!

I am just as excited about sharing the latest research and knowledge with patients. It is important people understand how the health of their mouth affects their body and vice versa. I want patients to be informed advocates for their oral and overall health and to make educated decisions.

BEYOND THE OFFICE

Raised in Dedham, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston, I have considered Rockville, Maryland to be my home since 1987. My favorite pastimes include traveling and exploring new-to-me places, attending and supporting theater and community events, hiking, and losing myself in a good book.

Above all, though, I treasure being with family: I have two children, a companion cat, and five younger siblings. Time with loved ones is always my priority!
