How is Sleep Apnea Diagnosed?
Our team at Callahan Dental can help you through the process of diagnosis and treatment. A sleep physician will conduct a detailed medical and family history, a physical exam and conduct a sleep study. A sleep study records what happens with your breathing while you sleep.
There are 2 common types of sleep studies - a Polysomnogram (conducted in a sleep center) and an at home portable sleep monitor.
Dr. Callahan will work with your sleep physician to determine the best treatment for you.
How is sleep apnea treated?
Treatments for sleep apnea depend on the severity of each individual case, and the type of apnea. Basic treatment can be behavioral — for instance, patients are instructed to lose weight, stop smoking, or sleep on their sides instead of on their backs. Beyond that, a PAP device (positive airwary pressure ie, CPAP, BiPAP, AutoPap) or Oral sleep apnea appliance (MAD) can be used to position the mouth in such a way that prevents throat blockage. In more severe cases, surgery may be the best option.
Dr. Callahan is a Qualified Dentist and a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM). Dr. Callahan helps treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea with oral appliance therapy. For more information about AADSM, visit www.aadsm.org.
What is Oral Appliance Therapy?
Oral appliance therapy (often called a MAD mandibular advancement device) is an effective, non-invasive treatment option for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea that fits easily into your lifestyle. A dental oral appliance looks like a sports mouth guard and is worn during sleep. It supports the jaw in a forward position to help maintain and open airway, preventing sleep apnea and snoring.
Dr. Callahan can make a custom -fitted oral appliance using a 3D scan of your teeth. It is comfortable, easy to wear, quiet, portable, convenient for travel and easy to clean. It helps you breathe better so you can get a full night's sleep.
