The first 48 hours are most important in maximizing your whitening results for a long lasting, bright, healthy smile.

For the first 48 hours avoid foods and beverages that could stain, such as:

  • Coffee/Tea
  • Tobacco Products
  • Mustard/Ketchup
  • Cola
  • Red Wine
  • Soy Sauce
  • Berry Pies
  • Red Sauces

For the first 24 hours, use MI Paste Plus. Rub onto teeth every 1 to 2 hours. Spit out excess. This helps to minimize sensitivity.

Maintain your DASH Smile by:

  • Avoiding staining related habits such as, tobacco and red wine.
  • Use an electric toothbrush - Sonicare/Oral B

Do not eat or drink anything hot for one hour.

Do not chew gum; eat anything sticky or crunchy while the provisional is in place.

Floss daily, but pull the floss through, do not come up through the contact of the teeth.

It is VERY IMPORTANT that the provisional stays in place as the teeth will shift without it in place. If it comes out, try pushing it back into place, if it will not stay in place or you have a problem call the office at (301) 948-1212 to schedule a short appointment to have it re-cemented.

Oral Surgery Post-Op Instructions

We feel it is very important for you to follow these instructions following your extraction.

DO’S

  1. Bite gauze firmly for 1-2 hours. Minimize talking and try not to chew on the gauze. You can swallow while biting on the gauze.
  2. If bleeding continues, fold and moisten a piece of gauze and bite firmly for 1 hour.

Note: It is normal to experience some red to reddish-brown oozing for up to 24 hours. If active bleeding occurs, you may gently bite on a tea bag soaked in cold water and wrung completely. If bleeding is not controlled by this method, call Dr. Callahan or Dr. Thomas at (301) 948-1212.

  3. Take medication as prescribed.
  4. To minimize post-operative swelling, apply a cold pack to the side of your face for 20 minutes on, 10 minutes off, and repeat.
  5. 24 hours after the extraction, rinse with warm salt water after meals and at bedtime for 2 days.

The key to rapid healing is to stabilize the blood clot. These recommendations will promote a successful recovery.

  2. Do not sip through a straw for 48 hours.
  3. Do not smoke for 48 hours.

Following these recommendations will greatly minimize any post-operative complications. If you experience moderate to severe pain, pain beyond 72 hours, fever, swelling, bleeding, or if you have any questions or unusual circumstances call Dr. Callahan or Dr. Thomas at (301) 948-1212.
